Identify Bondage in Your Life

Written by Anne Davis. Posted in

I have been reading a book about the history of Haiti, and have been horrified by the intense suffering of slavery that led to a slave revolt and the first black nation in our modern world. The same thing is happening in parts of Iraq today as it splinters into different ethnic and religious areas. The intense desire for freedom seems to be inherent in human nature.

It is difficult for Americans to empathize with the suffering of bondage, but that suffering is a biblical concept and throwing it off is a biblical commandment.

I suggest that we often fail to recognize the bondage in our lives and the painful suffering that follows. In the Gospel of John we hear Yeshua talking to believing Jews (these words apply to us also). “The truth will set you free,” he declared. “But we have never been enslaved to anyone,” they replied. Now listen carefully to Yeshua’s answer. “Everyone who commits sin is a slave to sin” (John 8:32-34).

In the biblical sense, which stems originally from Hebrew, “truth” is more than knowing the Word of God. It is walking in righteousness. When we walk in the ways of God we are truly free, but when we walk in the ways of the world we submit to the crushing control of Satan.

I suggest that you scrutinize your life and identify one area that is painful and is causing suffering. Don’t try to do too much. Just take one small area of your life. Now listen again to Yeshua’s words. “The truth will set you free.” First you must identify the biblical truth that applies to your situation. Then you must “stand” on that truth and insist, “Get behind me, Satan!” Don’t forget to turn to your Lord Yeshua and seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit. You can do it!
